How Does the XRebel Skills File Work?
Download and Set Up XRebel Automatically
With the XRebel skills file, your agent can download and configure XRebel, cutting down on implementation time so you can focus on the work that really matters.
Diagnose and Fix Performance Issues More Efficiently
Your agent can diagnose why a running JVM web application is slow from XRebel's per-request records, then verify the fix against fresh measurements.
What You Need to Get Started
Since your agent will automatically download, install, and configure JRebel with the help of the skills file, the prerequisites are minimal. However, to get started, you will need:
- XRebel 2026.4.0 or later. Earlier versions do not write the request dump; the skill detects this and asks you to update.
- An XRebel license or free trial. See manuals.jrebel.com/xrebel/ for licensing or start your free trial.
- A JVM web application that serves HTTP requests, which can be started with the XRebel agent (-javaagent) and a few system properties.
- jq (recommended) for traversing the recorded call tree; the skill’s recipes use it.
How to Use the XRebel Skills File: 7 Easy Steps
- Access the skills file.
- Ask your AI agent to install the XRebel skill.
- Have the agent reload its list of available skills so it can recognize and activate the XRebel skill.
- Ask the agent to download XRebel from its official source and set it up.
- Launch the application with the request dump and trace collection already on. The skill lists the JVM properties to set. Turning them on later costs a restart and loses the state you were studying.
- Reproduce the slow behavior against the running application, then let the agent read only the records its own requests produced.
- Ask for a measured before-and-after. A fix is done when the query count, query time, or duration actually moved for the same endpoint, not when the code looks right.

Optional: Pair XRebel with JRebel for the Fix Loop
The XRebel and JRebel skills are designed to complement each other. XRebel tells the agent what is slow and why; JRebel lets it apply the fix without restarting.
With both attached, the agent can measure a request, change the code, have it reloaded into the same running JVM, re-send the request, and compare the new record with the old one, all in one session and against the same application state.
